Anthropologist Dr Farhan Samanani brings together case studies from around the world and his own research to suggest how we can build healthy communities and flourish together rather than focus on what divides us.
Samanani says we are increasingly coming to see a difference in values or ethnicity as an existential threat. He looks at how we got to a point where we surround ourselves with like-minded people and double down on our own convictions to keep difference at bay. And he explains how his research provides insights into the capacity of humankind to connect across divides.
Canada-born Samanani studied as a Cambridge Gates Scholar – a small group of international graduate students selected for their potential to create positive social change. He has written for Aeon, Open Democracy, and Huffington Post.
