Former immigration judge James Hanratty talks about the updated version of his book on migration, which tackles the latest issues including the points-based system, Channel crossings, the Windrush affair, and Hong Kong.
Hanratty spent his working life in the legal system including ten years as an immigration judge. He has seen the issues at first hand and had to make decisions that changed people’s lives. He recalls his life working in the legal system and offers thoughts on the debates over migration that divide the country and trouble our conscience.
Hanratty worked in the House of Lords and the Royal Courts of Justice. Until 2014 he was an immigration judge dealing with asylum seekers from around the world. Here he talks to Professor Ian Goldin, professor of globalisation and development at the University of Oxford and a former vice-president of the World Bank.
