Anne Marie O’Dwyer

Psychiatrist Professor Anne Marie O’Dwyer combats myths and misinformation around cancer and offers advice on dealing with the emotional burden for those living with the disease and those supporting them.

O’Dwyer draws on decades of experience to talk about destigmatising the shame, fear and denial people often experience. And she provides a guide to facing the illness and to approaching tricky conversations. O’Dwyer says her years of work have revealed a lack of guides to help people deal with the emotional side of cancer.

O’Dwyer is a clinical professor at Trinity College, Dublin, and a psychiatrist with almost four decades of clinical experience. She has worked at the Maudsley and Addenbrooke’s Hospital and long term at Trinity College and St James’ Hospital in Dublin. O’Dwyer spent more than half of her career working directly with patients who have cancer and wrote the textbook Practical Psychiatry for Students and Trainees on the psychological aspects of medical care for Oxford University Press.
