Amber Husain talks to Gary Francione

Writer Amber Husain offers a critique of our romantic view of animals and questions whether it is compatible with eating their flesh.

Husain asks whether our appetite for meat can be redeemed by the way we look at and ‘love’ our animals. And she questions whether an ethical approach to farming, sale and consumption of meat can really save the planet and our souls. Husain draws on images from art, film, Instagram and advertising to demonstrate our visual culture of meat and explore the nature of love in human-animal relationships.

Husain is completing a PhD at UCL on art and mind-body medicine in early neoliberal Britain. She has worked as a university research fellow, book editor and magazine co-editor. Her previous book is Replace Me. Here she talks to expert in animal law and ethics Professor Gary Francione. Francione appears in his own right at four other festival events.
