Political historian Lord Professor Paul Bew looks at the stories of one of the greatest Irish leaders of the 19th century Charles Stewart Parnell and his lieutenant, John Dillon, and explores the divisions they exposed in Irish politics and that still live on today.
Parnell was a protestant and one of the greatest Irish leaders of the 19th century and a mover on the international stage. Parnell was a catholic and the last leader of the Irish party in Westminster. Bew says the differences between the two men reflect Ireland’s past and its future. The legacy of both men is there whenever the principle of consent for a united Ireland is discussed. And Bew says the legacy is even more profound when Irish nationalism tries to transcend a tribalist outlook based on the historic Catholic nation, even though the country is no longer very Catholic.
Bew is emeritus professor of Irish politics at Queens University Belfast and a crossbench peer in the House of Lords. His previous books include Ireland: The Politics of Enmity, 1789-2006. Here he talks to Professor Ian McBride, Foster Professor of Irish History at Hertford College, Oxford.
Part of the festival’s programme of Irish literature and culture.
