Philosopher Dr Nikhil Krishnan looks at the questions dominating the minds of Oxford philosophers in the early 20th century including: What are the limits of language? How to bring philosophy closer to everyday life? What is a good human being?

Krishnan says thinkers such as Gilbert Ryle, J. L. Austin, Elizabeth Anscombe and Iris Murdoch aspired to a new level of watchfulness and self-awareness about language in a period shadowed by war and the rise of fascism. He looks at their friendships and rivalries, shared preoccupations and passionate disagreements. Krishnan says they were far from being a tweed and pipes brigade and produced masterpieces of British modernism that drew on wartime lives as soldiers, spies, conscientious objectors and prisoners of war.

Krishnan is a fellow in philosophy at the University of Cambridge. His essays and reviews have appeared in New Yorker, New Statesman, Daily Telegraph and Literary Review.
