Leading Shakespeare expert Professor Emma Smith explains the processes and history behind the publication of the Bard’s First Folio.

Smith includes details from the recent discovery of a hitherto unknown edition of the First Folio at Mount Stuart House on the Isle of Bute. And she looks at some of the obstacles to the first publication, from the cost of paper to employment of print shop apprentices and difficulties in gaining rights to the plays. Smith says that the production of the First Folio was firmly located in the political and economic realities of Jacobean London.

Smith is professor of Shakespeare studies at the University of Oxford. Her previous books include the bestselling This is Shakespeare and Portable Magic: A History of Books and their Readers.
