Former chief of the general staff General The Lord Richard Dannatt explains how the winning British Army from World War I was later mismanaged and found itself unprepared for the outbreak of World War II.
Dannatt and his co-author, military historian Robert Lyman, say we neglect to understand who our enemy might be and how to defeat them at our peril. They say the strategic vision gained from a series of victories between 1916 and 1918 was lost and there was little focus on who Britain might have to fight and how. It left the British Army in no position to fight a first-class European army in 1939 and to its poor performance in both Norway and France in 1940.
Dannatt was the professional head of the British Army between 2006 and 2008 and is now the foremost military commentator in the UK. He is often seen on television speaking about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its implications for the West. He has sat in the House of Lords as a crossbencher since 2010.
