The Eagle and the Lion: Rome, Persia and an Unwinnable Conflict
Adrian Goldsworthy

Oxford Martin School: Seminar Room

Historian Adrian Goldsworthy tells the story of rivalry between the two greatest empires of the ancient world and of their rise and fall.
Goldsworthy says the Roman Empire shaped the culture of the western world and imposed peace and prosperity on an unprecedented scale. However, it was unable to follow in the footsteps of Alexander the Great and impose its rule in the East where the Parthian and then the Persian empires ruled. Goldsworthy examines seven centuries of conflict between these great empires that neither would win and looks at some of the characters involved.
Goldsworthy is bestselling author of non-fiction works on the ancient world and of historical novels. His non-fiction includes Philip and Alexander: Kings and Conquerors; Caesar; The Fall of the West; Pax Romana; and Hadrian’s Wall. Goldsworthy also advises on historical documentaries for the History Channel, National Geographic, and the BBC.
