Former Labour Treasury minister Liam Byrne warns that inequality of wealth threatens our society, economy and politics and sets out a plan to rebuild a wealth-owning democracy.

Byrne bases his argument on discussions with former prime ministers, presidents, policymakers and experts at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, World Bank and International Monetary Fund. He says it’s time for solutions that are not only radical but also plausible and achievable. We could live longer, happier and wealthier lives if we master ways of sharing wealth without war or revolution.

Byrne has been an MP for Birmingham Hodge Hill, one of the most income-deprived communities in Britain, for nearly 20 years. He was a minister in Gordon Brown’s cabinet and now chairs the global parliamentary network on the World Bank and International Monetary Fund and sits on the House of Commons foreign affairs select committee. In October, he became chair of the House of Commons business and trade committee.
