Environmental philosopher Professor Christopher Preston explains what we can learn from animals that are defying the odds and recovering from the threat of extinction.

More than 900 species have been wiped from the planet since industrialisation and Preston says there are crucial lessons to be learned from those animals defying global trends towards extinction. He looks at how animals such as the bears of Italy, bison of North America and whales in the Atlantic have made a comeback. How has it happened? What changes in thinking did it demand? Preston offers a philosophical shift in how we should think about animals and calls for a change in attitude to aid their recovery.

Preston teaches environmental philosophy at the University of Montana. His essays have appeared in Atlantic, Smithsonian, Aeon, and on the BBC website.
