Writer Andrew Robinson tells the story of Einstein’s time in Oxford and uncovers a less familiar side to the world’s most famous scientist.

Einstein visited Oxford in 1931 to lecture and receive an honorary degree. He returned in 1932 and 1933 as a refugee from Nazi Germany. Robinson reveals how the city appealed to him deeply and how he took part in its science, politics and music and often wandered the streets alone. He stayed in rooms once used by Lewis Carroll where he wrote a rhymed German poem, now kept in the Bodleian Library, in which he described himself as an old hermit and a roaming barbarian.

Robinson is author of more than 25 books including two on Einstein and Genius: A Very Short Introduction. He will be introduced by Samuel Fanous, head of publishing at the Bodleian Library

Part of the programme of Jewish and Hebrew literature and culture.
