Curator and expert on Russian art Sjeng Scheijen tells the story of the Russian avant garde and how they transformed the modern world and survived a totalitarian regime, civil war, hunger and terror.

Scheijen says artists such as Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Lyubov Popova, Alexander Rodchenko, Olga Rozanova and Vladimir Tatlin threw themselves into the revolutionary struggle after the tsars were toppled in 2017. Their murals, posters and installations transformed the visual landscape, growing their reputation in Europe but putting them under pressure from the new radical leaders in Moscow. Scheijen describes events through personal memories drawn from the archives, including stories of violent repression, incarcerations and torture.

Scheijen is an internationally acclaimed expert on Russian arts. He has curated important exhibitions in London and elsewhere, is a former Dutch cultural attaché in Moscow and author of Diaghilev: A Life.
