Voices of Europe. The Outsiders: Refugees in Europe since 1492
Philipp Ther
Thursday, 31 March 2022
6:00pm
1 hour
Oxford Martin School: Seminar Room
£7 - £12.50
Historian Professor Philipp Ther talks about the refugee crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and explains how refugees and asylum seekers have been more welcomed in Europe at certain times than others.
In his book, Ther looks at every major refugee movement since 1492 when Spain’s Catholic rulers sparked the first mass flight in modern history. He outlines the causes of mass flight, including religious intolerance, ethnic cleansing, political persecution and war, and he explains why refugees have been welcomed at some periods in history but not in others.
Ther will talk particularly about the current refugee crisis in Eastern Europe where around three million people have fled Ukraine since the Russian invasion.
Ther is a professor of central European history at the University of Vienna specialising in the history of refugees. His books include Europe since 1989: A History; The Dark Side of Nation-States: Ethnic Cleansing in Modern Europe; and Center Stage: Operatic Culture and Nation Building in Nineteenth-Century Central Europe.
