Traitor King: The Scandalous Exile of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor

Andrew Lownie

Thursday, 31 March 2022

4:00pm

1 hour

Weston Lecture Theatre

£7 - £12.50

Author and literary agent Andrew Lownie talks about his new book on the abdication of Edward VIII and reveals new detail about how he and his wife actively intrigued against Britain in wartime and in peacetime.

Lownie has drawn on extensive research in previously unused archives and freedom of information requests to reveal that the Duke and Duchess of Windsor were more than naïve dupes of the Germans. He reveals the story behind German attempts to recruit Edward as a British Pétain; Churchill’s attempts to prevent publication of details of the Windsors’ intrigues; full details of the feud with the British Royal Family; and that the Duchess felt trapped in a marriage she never wanted.

Lownie started his own literary agency after spells working in publishing and for a literary agency. He is also author of a biography of John Buchan and of a literary companion to Edinburgh.
