Astrobiology and Christian Doctrine: Exploring the Implications of Life in the Universe

Andrew Davison interviewed by Gillian Straine

Friday, 22 March 2024

2:00pm

1 hour

Pusey House: Chapel

£8 - £15

Theologian and trained scientist Professor Andrew Davison explores how Christians might respond to evidence of life on other planets if it is found.

Davison draws on his extensive knowledge of Christian thought, in particular the work of Thomas Aquinas. He says the topic of life beyond Earth has a long history in Christian theology but the idea has never been pursued deeply. Davison says recent discoveries using powerful new telescopes have made the subject of life beyond Earth one of the biggest discussion points between science and religion.

Davison is the Starbridge Professor of Theology and Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, Dean of Chapel at Corpus Christi Cambridge and a canon of St Albans Cathedral. He writes on Christian doctrine, science and philosophy. His previous books include Participation in God and The Love of Wisdom. Here he talks to writer, theologian, coach, communicator, charity leader and priest Rev Dr Gillian Straine.
