English tutor Nicholas Perkins discusses how books and writing describe gifts and how books can become precious gifts in themselves.

Perkins has edited a selection of essays from expert contributors that explore the ways writing interacts with the fundamental impulse to give, receive and reciprocate. Perkins says stories of sacrifice, love, loyalty and friendship are woven into the books and objects discussed and show the power of the gift to shape stories we tell about ourselves. Books and objects featured include gifts made by and for Queen Elizabeth I, Victorian Christmas tales and Olaudah Equiano, who was treated as property or ‘given’ as a gift by those who enslaved him, but who gained his freedom and wrote his life story.

Perkins is associate professor and tutor in English at St Hugh’s College, University of Oxford. He was the curator of a Bodleian Libraries exhibition that accompanied the book.
