Labour MP Nick Thomas-Symonds looks at the myths around Clement Attlee, the man who created the welfare state and decolonised large parts of the British Empire.
Attlee is seen by many as the greatest prime minister of the 20th century, but Attlee the man has remained elusive. Thomas-Symonds asks how such a modest and moderate man brought about so many enduring changes. He looks at the secrets of his leadership style and explains how his personal attributes accounted for both his spectacular successes and his failures. Thomas-Symonds looks at why Labour found itself out of office just six years after its 1945 victory despite all its achievements.
Thomas-Symonds has been MP for Torfaen since 2015 and is Shadow Secretary of State for International Trade. He was previously a barrister and academic. His previous books are Nye: The Political Life of Aneurin Bevan and Harold Wilson: The Winner. Here he talks to the Provost of Worcester College David Isaac, a former chair of the Equalities and Human Rights Commission of Great Britain and of Stonewall.
