Writer and Shakespeare expert Dr Sophie Duncan goes in search of the story and legacy of the ultimate romantic heroine, Juliet.

Duncan looks back to the Renaissance stories behind Shakespeare’s child bride and to the boy actor who inspired her creation on stage. And she draws on rich cultural and historical sources to show Juliet’s reach and fascination for, among others, enslaved people in the Caribbean, Italian fascists in Verona, and lovers in Afghanistan. Duncan says Juliet is for now, for ever and for everyone.

Duncan is research fellow and dean for welfare at Magdalen College, University of Oxford. She writes about Shakespeare and gender. Her previous books include Shakespeare’s Women and the Fin de Siècle. here she tals to journalist and reviewer for the FT Suzi Feay.
