Two physicists who put storytelling at the heart of their work, Dr Felix Flicker and sci-fi novelist Femi Fadugba, discuss storytelling in physics and how they use it to educate and entertain their readers.
Flicker is a lecturer at the School of Physics and Astronomy at Cardiff University and his book, The Magick of Matter: Crystals, Chaos and the Wizardry of Physics, aims to bring a sense of wonder back to the study of condensed physics. He explains how it will change everything you ever thought about wizardry and witchcraft and how condensed physics is the scientific mechanism behind the mysteries of alchemy, transmogrification and more.
Fadugba studied for a masters degree in quantum physics at Oxford. He has worked as a management consultant, solar financier, theoretical physicist and science tutor and latterly as a writer of young adult sci-fi novels. His debut novel, The Upper World, is soon to be a feature on Netflx. The story follows two teenagers and explores themes of love, violence and time travel physics. Its sequel, The Mirror World, is published in 2025.
