Volcanologist Professor Tamsin Mather talks about her travels to volcanoes across the globe and explains what these geological giants can teach us about our environment and climate change.

Mather has travelled across deserts, through jungles and on ice caps to examine some of the world’s most important volcanoes. She explains how they have always helped to maintain the Earth’s life systems and how they may even have helped to provide the chemical ingredients to kickstart life on Earth. Do volcanoes exist on other planets and what could that tell us about whether we could live there if we exhaust our own planet?

Mather is professor of earth sciences at the University of Oxford. She is often seen and heard on television and radio science shows including the Infinite Monkey Cage on BBC Radio 4.
