Literary scholar and author Alastair Niven talks about his life in education and the arts.

Niven is a former English lecturer who went on to hold significant posts in the fields or the arts and education including director general of The Africa Centre, director of literature at the Arts Council and of the British Council and president of English PEN. He is also author of many books including on D H Lawrence and on Commonwealth writing. He was chairman of the Commonwealth Writers Prize for 20 years and has twice served on the Booker panel. He was awarded the Royal Society of Literature Benson Medal in 2021 for service to literature across a whole career.
