Martin Wolf

The Crisis of Democratic Capitalism and How to Fix It

Martin Wolf Interviewed by Yuan Yang

Saturday, 1 April 2023

6:00pm

1 hour

Sheldonian Theatre

£7 - £12.50

One of the UK’s leading economic commentators Martin Wolf explains why the relationship between democracy and capitalism is coming undone and argues that it is a marriage that cannot be broken.

The marriage of liberal economics and democratic governance has brought immense benefits to the world, but is now facing its toughest tests in decades. Wolf has charted capitalism’s ups and downs for decades. Drawing on his experiences and years of research, in his new book he tells what is both the defining account of capitalism’s crisis but also what is a very personal story.

Wolf is chief economics commentator at the Financial Times. He is a member of the International Media Council of the World Economic Forum and a winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Gerald Loeb Awards. His books include The Shifts and the Shocks, Fixing Global Finance and Why Globalization Works. Here he talks to Yuan Yang, Europe-China correspondent for the FT and co-founder of the campaign, Rethinking Economics, that calls for a more relevant curriculum that reflects the real world..

Previous FT Weekend lectures have been given by Mervyn King (2018), Michael Heseltine (2019), and Tom Tugendhat (2022).
