The Natural Order of Money

Roy Sebag Interviewed by Paul Yowell

Saturday, 1 April 2023

10:00am

1 hour

Lincoln College: Oakeshott Room

£7 - £12.50

Self-made entrepreneur Roy Sebag talks about money and its connection to the natural world and argues for a sustainable system that recognises the importance of farming and of ecological accountability.

Sebag was born to third-generation farmers but spent his early working life in finance away from the countryside. He says the 2008 economic crash led him to explore what is lost when we lose our connection to the natural world and to face up to the fact that our economy becomes distorted when we forget about farmers. Sebag has drawn up a theory of ‘ecological accountability’ that argues only a ‘natural money’ can assure sustainable prosperity.

Sebag has founded five public limited companies that have raised more than $1 billion in capital. The companies have all been based on an injustice or a technical problem and have been focused on breaking down barriers. They include BitGold, Goldmoney Inc, and Menē. He has also recently started a sustainable farming enterprise in the UK.
Here he talks to Paul Yowell, associate professor of law at Oxford University with interests in constitutional theory, comparative constitutional law, and regulation of the European Central Bank and the role of the common currency in European integration.
