Historian and writer Alwyn Turner describes how the turbulent period between two world wars in Britain laid the foundations for our modern nation.
A Shellshocked Nation is the next instalment in Turner’s acclaimed history of Britain. He explains how there was a desire for escapist fun through jazz, radio comedies and cinema, as a respite to the Great Depression. However, the storm clouds were gathering. Turner tells the story of the General Strike, the BBC, Irish Home Rule and the rise of fascism.
‘This is just glorious: almost every page stops you dead with insight into a world at once utterly strange, yet still living somewhere within us all’ James Hawes, author The Shortest History of England
Turner is a historian and writer, who teaches at the University of Chichester. His histories of Britain include All in it Together: England in the Early 20th Century and Little Englanders: Britain in the Edwardian Era.
