Historian Professor Jonathan Harris introduces a history of the Crusades that reflects new research and understanding of the period and the approach to medieval warfare.
Harris is editor of The Oxford Illustrated History of the Crusades, which brings together 15 contributors on different aspects of the Crusades. They focus on changes and developments that have taken place in the study of the Crusades over the last 25 years. Subjects include the nature of 11th-century European society that gave rise to the holy war ethos, launch of the First Crusade and capture of Jerusalem, the reaction of the Islamic world, the impact on Jewish communities, and literature and song that grew out of the Crusades.
Harris is professor of the history of Byzantium, Royal Holloway, University of London and author of a novel, Theosis.
