Biographer and Jane Austen expert Paula Byrne discusses her new novel, Six Weeks by the Sea, in which she imagines Jane Austen falling in love.

The Austen family heads to the Georgian seaside resort of Sidmouth in 1801 for a six-week holiday. Jane’s brother Frank is on leave from the Navy and wants to unite Jane with his friend, Captain Peter Parker. However, another holidaymaker, the handsome lawyer, literary man and abolitionist Samuel Rose is determined to make Jane’s acquaintance. Jane’s relationships with both men bring unexpected surprises.

Byrne is author of bestselling biographies including The Adventures of Miss Barbara Pym, The Real Jane Austen and Jane Austen: Rise of a Genius. She is founder and chief executive of ReLit, a charity that promotes the mental health benefits of reading.
