Award-winning biographer Jenny Uglow provides a unique insight into the mind and character of Britain’s first great nature writer Gilbert White.
White was a curate living in Selborne, Hampshire. He kept journals about the local flora, fauna and people. In 1781, he was halfway to completing his groundbreaking work, The Natural History of Selborne, a book that has spellbound generations with its close and sympathetic observations and remains in print to this day. Uglow takes the year 1781 and follows White and his journal as he records frost, summer drought, the migration of birds and the coming harvest.
Uglow is author of award-winning biographies of Elizabeth Gaskell, George Eliot, William Hogarth, Thomas Bewick and Edward Lear.
