Booker winner Howard Jacobson talks about his latest novel, Howl, a devastating psychological portrait of a primary school head teacher who believes the world is crumbling around him.

Ferdinand Draxler is the son of a Holocaust survivor who accuses him of cowardice and father of a daughter who accuses him of genocide. Following a massacre from which he doubts the world will recover, he finds himself at the crossroads of history. Or is it just a bend in the cul-de-sac of his gloomy nature? His wife asks him to seek mental health support, but can’t she see that the world is crumbling around them?

Jacobson is author of 18 novels and six works of non-fiction. The Finkler Question won the 2010 Booker Prize, and he was shortlisted again in 2014 for J.

Here he talks to novelist Dr Louisa Treger, author of The Paris Muse and Madwoman.
