Gary Francione and Anna Charlton

Professors of law and experts in animal law and ethics Gary Francione and Anna Charlton argue that if you think animals matter morally then you should stop eating animal products. Charlton will be joining the event via video link.

Francione and Charlton say there is no moral difference between cruelty inflicted on an animal in, for example, a dog fight, and the cruelty inflicted on animals so we can eat them. Many people feel uneasy about the animal food on our plates and have thought about stopping eating it. Francione and Charlton look at the excuses most people give for being able to eat animals and explain why these excuses don’t work.

Francione is a world- leading authority on animal rights and the first academic to teach animal rights theory in an American law school. He is distinguished professor of law and Nicholas deB. Katzenbach Scholar of Law and Philosophy at Rutgers University. Charlton is adjunct professor of law at Rutgers University. Francione and Charlton co-founded the Rutgers Animal Rights Law Clinic and are joint authors of a series of books on animal ethics and veganism.
