Award-winning independent filmmaker Shamim Sarif introduces a screening of her film, Polarized, which follows two contrasting lives lived in the same town, followed by a question-and-answer session.

Sarif’s film explores the polarised world we live in. It is set in a fading small town in the Canadian prairie where singer/songwriter Lisa goes to work at a modern farm run by a successful Muslim family, the sort of farm that has pushed Lisa’s family farm out of business. Lisa is fired by her boss, Dalia, after a heated encounter that exposes Lisa’s racism. But the incident leads to a growing attraction between the two women who must question the unspoken rules that keep them apart.

Sarif is an award-winning writer, director, novelist and screen writer. Her work includes Despite the Falling Snow, starring Rebecca Ferguson and Charles Dance and her latest work includes the fourth season of You for Netflix and Warner. She is of South Asian descent and identifies as LGBTQIA+. Her work focuses on diversity, feminism, social impact and humanism.
