Author Clare Mulley tells the story of Elżbieta Zawacka who was the only woman to parachute from Britain into enemy occupied territory in Poland.
Mulley explains how Zawacka, known as Agent ZO, managed to establish a crucial intelligence network in Poland. She couriered microfilm across wartime borders and played a key role in the Warsaw Uprising and the liberation of her country. She was imprisoned by the Soviets and her story went largely untold for 40 years. Mulley spoke to people who fought alongside Zawacka and explored new archives to bring her story back to life.
Mulley writes about the female experience during World War Two. Her previous books include The Women who Flew for Hitler, The Spy Who Loved and The Woman who Saved the Children. She is a winner of the Polish honour, the Bene Merito, and the Daily Mail Biographers Club Prize.
