Celebrated novelists Benjamin Wood and Nicola Garrard discuss the common themes in their latest novels about young lives in coastal towns seeking a better future.
Wood grew up in Merseyside and is a senior lecturer in creative writing at King’s College London and winner of France’s Prix du Roman Fnac. His fifth novel is Seascraper. Its hero Thomas scrapes the beach for shrimps but dreams of being a folk musician. When a striking American visitor turns up with a promise of Hollywood glamour, Thomas begins to see a different future.
Garrard’s third novel On the Edge, draws on her own rural childhood. It features Rhys, who lives in a South Devon coastal town where work dries up in the winter and housing is hard to come by. Rhys finds solace in surfing but his anger is ignited when that is taken away. He is drawn to a radical political activist, and his action s soon spiral out of control.
