Weston Lecture Theatre

Theologian Rt Revd Dr Graham Tomlin explains why he views the scientist, geometer, physicist, philosopher, polemicist and theologian Blaise Pascal as one of the makers of the modern world.
Pascal died in poverty after just 39 years of life, but Tomlin says he achieved much in that short time. He virtually invented probability theory, proved the existence of a vacuum, performed the first proper scientific experiment, designed and built the first calculating machine and wrote one of the most famous satirical works in French literature. Tomlin explores Pascal’s short life and offers new thoughts on his impact and the relevance of his ideas for contemporary society.
Tomlin is director of the Centre for Cultural Witness at Lambeth Palace and former Bishop of Kensington. He taught theology in Oxford and London and is the author of many books.
