Behavioural scientist Professor Paul Dolan looks at why we discriminate against those we disagree with and asks how we can better accommodate opposing views.
Dolan says we like to think we are tolerant, but many of us struggle to engage with people whose opinions differ strongly from our own, even if they may have something useful to contribute. Dolan defines this as ‘beliefism’. He looks at subjects such as class privilege, monogamy, body image and fat shaming, and the balance of freedom and security during the pandemic. Dolan looks at why we divide ourselves into opposing camps and how overcoming this discrimination can help us to be happier and more successful and fulfilled.
Dolan is professor of behavioural science at the London School of Economics and Political Science and author of bestselling books, Happiness by Design and Happy Ever After.
