Join the Bodleian Library and its special guest, the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, for a show-and-tell exploring pre-World War II Yiddish, Hebrew, and Russian children’s literature.

Through colourful and handsomely illustrated examples from these institutions’ collections, this presentation will examine the range of Jewish children’s literature, its key authors and illustrators, and how its stories reflect the social and political goals of their creators. Scholar Catriona Kelly will present work by important Russian Jewish authors and illustrators in the Bodleian Library’s Opie Collection, including Samuil Marshak, Natalia Sats, Nina Simonovich-Efimova, and David Shterenberg. YIVO’s director of archives Stefanie Halpern will showcase Yiddish children’s literature including selections by Leyb Kvitko, Samuil Marshak, and Jacob Kaminski. The Bodleian’s Curator César Merchan-Hamann will share Hebrew language selections including books by Hayim Nahman Bialik, Nahum Gutman, and Lea Goldberg.
