Alister McGrath

Theologian and scientist Professor Alister McGrath argues for the return of ‘natural philosophy’ and its emphasis on both learning about and learning from nature, a concept that has been lost since the establishment of individual scientific disciplines.

McGrath explains how natural philosophy was understood as a way of exploring the human relationship with the natural world and encompassed natural sciences, mathematics, music, philosophy and theology. It faded into obscurity during the 19th century. McGrath outlines how natural philosophy could be revived and argues that it could encourage human understanding and respect for nature.

McGrath was professor of historical theology at the University of Oxford and is now Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion. His books include What’s the Point of Theology? and C S Lewis: A Life.
