Kaput: The End of the German Miracle
Wolfgang Münchau
Sunday, 30 March 2025
4:00pm
1 hour
Oxford Martin School: Lecture Theatre
£8 - £15
Journalist and commentator Wolfgang Münchau argues that weaknesses in the German economy have been brewing for decades and dominance of industrial interests threaten to leave the country behind.
Münchau says Germany’s dependence on Russian gas has become a liability and led many to question the traditional view of Germany’s political and economic success. However, he argues that the policies of the German state over decades have enriched a small number of companies and shareholders and done little for the majority. The dominance of industrial interests has meant Germany has been slow to adapt to the digital realities of the 21st century and led to an over-reliance on authoritarian countries such as Russia.
Münchau is director of the Eurointelligence news service and a New Statesman columnist. His focus is the European economy and European Union.
This event is part of the festival’s Voices of Europe programme.
