Former Norwegian foreign minister Professor Janne Haaland Matlary and historian and director of Oxford’s Changing Character of War Centre Professor Rob Johnson discuss how the NATO alliance can turn Moscow’s war on Ukraine from a challenge into a basis for renewal.
Haaland Matlary and Johnson have edited a collection of essays on how NATO countries could improve their integration and military interoperability. They explain how NATO member states reduced defence spending and limited interoperability following the end of the Cold War. The war in Ukraine and China and Russia’s stated aim to break up NATO and its Pacific equivalents have led to a new emphasis on integration and cooperation within NATO.
Haaland Matlary is professor of international politics at the University of Oslo and the Norwegian Military Command and Staff College. She is a former Norway deputy minister of foreign affairs. Johnson is an adjunct professor at the Norwegian Defence University Staff College and adjunct professor of strategic studies at Rennes School of Business in France. He is a government advisor on defence and security.
