Biographer and journalist Sonia Purnell uncovers the story of Pamela Churchill Harriman’s little understood impact on the seminal events of the 20th century.
Harriman’s death in 1997 was followed with scathing obituaries that wrote her off as a social climber and chronicled her infamous erotic adventures. However, Purnell says Harriman did much to shape the 20th century on both sides of the Atlantic. Her father-in-law Winston Churchill encouraged her to wine, dine and seduce Americans over to the cause against Hitler. In the US, she handpicked Clinton and helped him to the presidency. And she further influenced figures such as the Kennedys, Mandela, Truman Capote, Gianni Agnelli and Frank Sinatra.
Purnell is author of A Woman of No Importance: The Untold Story of Virginia Hall, WWII’s Most Dangerous Spy, winner of the Plutarch Award for Best Biography, First Lady: The Life and Wars of Clementine Churchill and Just Boris: A Tale of Blond Ambition.
