Former government economist Professor Stefan Dercon argues that extreme events such as typhoons, floods and earthquakes need not be disasters if countries and their partners are better prepared.

Recent disasters, including typhoons in the Philippines and Vanuatu and earthquakes in Haiti, Pakistan and Nepal have led to loss of life and huge financial impact. Dercon and his co-author insurance specialist Daniel Clarke take lessons form finance, political science, economics, psychology, and the natural sciences to show what practical steps countries can take to better protect themselves from the risk of disaster.

Dercon is a former chief economist at the UK Department for International Development and professor of economic policy at the University of Oxford.
