One of the UK’s leading public health experts Sir Muir Gray talks about his life and career and his contribution to a new book about reducing the risks of dementia – the disease that many people fear most.

Gray arrived in Oxford in 1971 to focus on disease prevention. He built local and then national disease prevention programmes including developing all the NHS screening programmes for pregnant women, children, adults and older. He developed NHS Choices www.nhs.uk, which has more than 40 million visits a month, set up the Centre for Evidence Based Medicine in Oxford, and has written a series of books, in particular on healthy ageing.

Gray is director of the Oxford Optimal Ageing Programme. Increase your Brainability is based on research from the programme. It suggests simple lifestyle changes that can increase your brainability, reduce risks and live better and longer. Here he talks to journalist Nick Higham, who was the BBC’s first ever media correspondent and is a former presenter of Meet the Author on the BBC news channel.

This event is part of a series on pioneers.
