The Blue Commons: Rescuing the Economy of the Sea
Guy Standing
Tuesday, 28 March 2023
4:00pm
1 hour
Oxford Martin School: Lecture Theatre
£7 - £12.50
Social and environmental campaigner and writer Professor Guy Standing exposes the devastating economic and environmental impact of the exploitation of the world’s oceans.
Standing says corporations are plundering the oceans with the help of global finance and complicit states. He says rampant exploitation and corruption drive the ocean economy and are destroying communities, intensifying inequality and driving ocean life to extinction. Standing argues that the oceans should be right at the centre of the fight against climate change and proposes building a ‘blue commons’ plan to prioritise the wellbeing of the seas and local communities.
Standing is an economist who has held professorships at Bath, London and Monash Universities, and was a programme director in the UN’s International Labour Organisation. He co-founded the Basic Income Earth Network and is author of Basic Income: And How We Can Make it Happen and Plunder of the Commons: A Manifesto for Sharing Public Wealth.
This event is part of a series on the uncovering of public scandals and on campaigns against injustice.
