Award-winning broadcaster Phil Tinline reveals the ritual building and breaking of shared national outlooks that runs through British politics of the last 100 years and offers hope that new political settlements are possible.
Tinline says the first century of mass democracy in Britain has seen politics lurch from crisis to crisis. He says we should be more interested in the periods of turmoil and misery than the dawn of new eras such as postwar Keynesianism or Thatcherite neoliberalism. How did the Great Depression and Nazism force politicians to think differently, and why do we only remember Thatcher’s triumph and not the years of hyperinflation, military coups and communist dictatorship that led up to it? Tinline argues that focusing on the periods of turmoil can help to illuminate our current age of upheaval.
‘At last, an original big history of British politics in the last 100 years’ Sir Anthony Seldon
Tinline works for BBC radio and has made many acclaimed documentaries about the way political history shapes our lives.
