Historian and writer Anna Keay gives an illustrated talk on her account of living through Britain’s revolutionary decade following the execution of Charles I in 1649.
Keay looks at what life was like as a conservative people tried revolution. She focuses on nine figures who made their names, including young prophet Anna Trapnel whose visions transfixed the nation; Cheshire lawyer John Bradshaw who found himself trying the king; the Countess of Derby who defended the last Royalist stronghold on the Isle of Man; and newspaper man and propagandist Marchamont Nedham.
Keay is director of the Landmark Trust and a former senior curator at English Heritage and Historic Royal Palaces. Her books include The Magnificent Monarch and The Last Royal Rebel: The Life and Death of James Duke of Monmouth.
