Historian and author Daniel Snowman discusses his memories of a Jewish childhood during the war and shares illustrated stories of life in Cambridge, in John F Kennedy’s America, at the University of Sussex, at the BBC during its heyday and of choral concerts under the world’s top conductors.

Snowman’s memoir includes stories of watching Churchill make one of his final speeches; interviewing Harry Truman about Hiroshima; spending a week in Bayreuth with Wagner’s daughter-in-law; meeting Pope John-Paul II, Isaiah Berlin, and Lord Snowdon; and getting to know Placido Domingo.

Snowman is a social and cultural historian and author of more than a dozen books, including The Hitler Emigrés and The Gilded Stage: A Social History of Opera. He spent a period at BBC radio producing broadcasts on cultural and historical topics.

This event is part of the festival’s programme of Jewish and Hebrew literature and culture.
