Department for Continuing Education: Lecture Theatre

Cultural historian Dr Steven Parissien takes a look at Britain’s drinking culture. What are our favourite drinks and what do they say about our wider culture?
Parissien explains how Britain has remained in the top five globally for alcohol intake since 1700. Our drinking culture, built on pubs, clubs and watering holes, defines us perhaps more than any other country. Parissien looks at 12 different drinks, from Babysham to WKD, Guiness and Aperol Spritz, and shows how each of them reflects and defines British culture and politics.
Parissien is director of studies in architectural history at Oxford University’s Department for Continuing Education and executive director of Gainsborough’s House Museum in Sudbury. His many previous books include Building Britannia: A History of Britain in 25 Buildings and The English Railway Station.
