Classicist Dr Carol Atack explains how the lived experience of Plato, one of the key western philosophers, had an impact on his thought.

Atack says Plato was born during a war that led to Athens’s defeat and decline. A restored democracy led to the execution of his teacher Socrates. Atack explains how his life in Athens led Plato to develop the Socratic dialogue into a philosophical tool and how he used Athenian institutions to create an imaginative world. Plato made Athens a place of new approaches to big questions about existence and the societies we create.

Atack teaches classical Greek and ancient philosophy at the University of Cambridge. She is author of The Discourse of Kingship in Classical Greece and Anachronism and Antiquity.
