Journalist Sally Gimson says the much-vaunted High-Speed 2 (HS2) rail project collapsed after being dogged by mismanagement, overspending and incompetence.

HS2 was meant to connect London with Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds and bridge the north-south divide. The route cuts through Buckinghamshire and clips the north eastern edge of Oxfordshire. Gimson met with politicians, engineers and ordinary people affected by the route to help her to understand what happened to the project. She explains why it has been reduced to a line from Birmingham to the outskirts of London at a cost of tens of billions of pounds.

Gimson has worked as a journalist for the Observer and Sunday Telegraph and was a producer for Deutsche Welle TV news in Berlin. She stood as a candidate for the Labour Party at the 2010 General Election. This event is part of a festival series on public scandals.
