Novelist Thomas Mogford talks about his new exotic tale of adventure, The Plant Hunter.
The novel is set in the dangerous world of the 19th-century plant hunters. Harry Compton is a salesman who has risen from the obscurity of nursery growing fields to become the ‘face that sold a thousand plants’. He inherits a fabled tree last heard of in The Travels of Marco Polo and a map. He sees a chance for fame and fortune but, before long, he finds himself fleeing England, rounding the Cape of Good Hope and sailing up the Yangtze.
‘A great adventure. Dripping with atmosphere and exotic life’ William Boyd
Mogford can trace his routes back to a line of famous horticulturalists. He has worked as a journalist for Time Out and as a translator for the European Parliament. He is also author of a series of crime novels about a lawyer from Gibraltar.
